این دوربین جایگزینی برای مدل EOS 20Da است و مخصوص عكاسی نجومی طراحی شده است. این دوربین طوری طراحی شده است تا بتواند رنگ‌های قرمز سحابی‌های گسترده‌ی آسمان شب را با حساسیت بالاتر (٦٥٦ نانومتر) خطوط هیدروژن-آلفا (Hα) بازنمایی كند. هم‌چنین این دوربین دارای قابلیت‌ها و امكانات پیشرفته‌ی دوربین EOS 60D است. این امكانات شامل صفحه‌ی نمایش ال‌سی‌دی چرخشی ٣اینچی برای بهبود كاركرد در حالت نمایش زنده (Live View) است. حسگر این دوربین همان حسگر CMOS ١٨ میلیون پیكسلی مدل EOS 60D بوده، و گستره‌ی حساسیت (ISO) آن نیز از ١٠٠ تا ٦٤٠٠ (قابل تقویت تا ١٢٨٠٠) است. این دوربین برای نوردهی‌های طولانی (بازبودن شاتر در مدت زیاد) از آسمان شب، مدلی ایده‌آل است.
